United States Overview (2022)

  • Total under correctional supervision: 5.5 million adults

    • Community supervision (probation/parole): 3.67 million (≈67%)

    • Incarcerated (prisons/jails): 1.83 million (≈33%)

  • Supervision rate: 2,060 per 100,000 adult residents

  • Trends:

    • 15th consecutive year of decline in overall supervision rates

    • Incarcerated population rose 3% from 2021, driven by increases in jail and prison populations

    • Probation population dropped by nearly 1 million since 2012

 Florida Snapshot (2022)

  • Prison population: 84,678 individuals

    • Up 5.3% from 2021

    • 100% were sentenced to one or more years (typically for felonies)

  • Incarceration rate: 377 per 100,000 residents

    • Slightly above the national average of 355

  • Facility breakdown:

    • 85.1% housed in state-run prisons

    • 13.9% in private prisons

    • 1.0% in local jails

  • Capacity status: Operating at 2% below maximum capacity
